What can gynaecology do for you?

Gynaecology is a medical speciality that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of genital and mammary pathology throughout a woman’s life. In particular, preventive medicine consultations and routine check-ups are key tools to prevent and detect diseases.

Regular visits to the gynaecologist are thus essential for the early diagnosis of any disorder and to resolve any doubts about health, sexuality and contraception that may arise.

Gynaecologists advise the first consultation in adolescence, with the onset of sexual relations. Afterwards, they recommend following a schedule of annual check-ups, depending on each woman’s history and pathologies, as well as her sexual and reproductive needs and concerns. Specialists have pointed out the importance of continuing gynaecological check-ups during the menopause and also after the age of 65.

In addition, there are special stages in a woman’s life such as preconception, pregnancy and postpartum when more detailed monitoring is necessary, which is carried out in collaboration with gynaecologists specialised in obstetrics and maternal-foetal medicine.

What is the difference between gynaecology and obstetrics?

Gynaecology is the part of the speciality that deals with women’s health, especially their reproductive system and associated pathologies, as well as the female reproductive cycle, from menstruation and fertility to menopause. Gynaecological consultation can also cover breast problems, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception and fertility disorders.

Obstetrics, on the other hand, is the aspect of gynaecology that deals with the woman and the foetus during pregnancy — the diseases and complications that may arise during this period, delivery and the postpartum period.

What is the speciality of maternal-foetal medicine and what does it involve?

The maternal-foetal medicine unit is a sub-specialisation of obstetrics and focuses on the follow-up of high-risk pregnancies and the diagnosis and treatment of complications that may arise during pregnancy. In this subspecialty, the woman and the foetus are both considered patients. Therefore, the subspecialty of maternal-foetal medicine addresses the health problems of both the mother and the future baby at any time during pregnancy, and even before and after. Specialists in this area have extensive medical, surgical and genetic expertise in complex pregnancies.

Maternal-foetal medicine specialists: diagnosis and protocol

Some of the interventions in which maternal-foetal medicine specialists take part include the following:

  • Pregnant women with chronic health problems.
  • Pre-existing maternal conditions such as HIV, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.
  • Complications from previous pregnancies, e.g., prematurity or pre-eclampsia.
  • Multiple pregnancies.
  • Early diagnosis of foetal disorders and diseases.
  • Genetic counselling.
  • Invasive therapies for treatment of the foetus before birth.
