Dr. Albert Obradors, Head of Eugin Laboratory, explains how he works every day to optimize all the laboratory processes

“My responsibility is to help the women who come to the clinic to get pregnant,” says Dr. Albert Obradors, biologist and head of the assisted reproduction laboratory at Eugin Clinic. “Therefore, when we take stock of the treatments performed at the clinic and see that the small improvements we have implemented in the laboratory have resulted in more patients achieving pregnancy, I feel very satisfied,” he says.

“In the world of science, if you want to stand out, you cannot stop for even a single day,” he says. “In our lab we go through all of our protocols every day, and if we see any glimmer of improvement, we implement it as soon as possible.” And this means that what happens in the lab is critical in assisted reproduction treatment: “These are small details that can affect the entire process. If there is even a little bit of room for improvement, go for it, “he says.

Made up of over twenty professionals, the laboratory team is always on the lookout to detect all the advances provided by a sector such as assisted reproduction, which is constantly evolving.

Thus, in addition to carrying out a monthly review of all the processes performed in the laboratory (in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, vitrifications, etc..), an individual control of each embryologist is also performed to standardize all the processes and ensure that everyone is working in the best possible way, whether individually or in groups.

Ongoing research

“Just as important as knowing how to implement improvements in our way of working in all laboratory processes is that of investing in research in order to keep on progressing”, says Dr. Obradors. In this regard, Eugin has a laboratory at the prestigious Barcelona Science Park, where part of its research is carried out. In addition, internal research projects are also conducted at the clinic’s own laboratory.

Sharing knowledge

“Research is a wide open field,” says Dr. Obradors, “and for this reason we are also open to sharing our knowledge and information on the latest advances in assisted reproduction with the scientific community and colleagues from other centres”.

“Every day I wonder what I can do to improve,” says Dr. Obradors. “We attend conferences, visit cutting-edge laboratories in other countries, and they visit us, we receive training, we adopt the latest technology to the lab,” he explains. “Thousands of patients have placed their trust in us, and I feel that we should return that trust to them through our good work,” he concludes.
