Young, altruistic and highly educated, the egg donor profile

The average age of egg donors is 27.07 years, according to data from the Eugin group

Eugin’s vast experience in egg donation treatments has allowed us to generate an egg donor’s profile. Based on our own data, it is a young, highly educated woman who volunteers to donate her eggs for altruistic reasons.

According to the information gathered by Eugin, the egg donor’s average age is 27.07 years. Fifty-two per cent have higher education studies. Seventy per cent are single and most of them have a job (42%). Regarding their origin, 84% of the donors are of Spanish nationality, all of whom reside in Spain.

All women who want to donate their eggs are assessed by means of medical tests and a psychological interview at the Eugin Group clinics. In fact, only 34% of the donor candidates meet the necessary requirements so as to be able to finally undergo the treatment.

A more exhaustive law than in other European countries has made Spain the leading country in egg donation. As for the motivation of the donors, the great majority are driven by altruistic reasons, according to Eugin Group’s medical director, Dr. Amelia Rodríguez-Aranda. “Some donors have already been mothers and understand a woman’s desire to be one; others have close relatives who have had difficulties getting pregnant and are aware of what it means for them to receive the solidarity and support of another woman,” explains the doctor.

It should be remembered that Law 14/2006 on Assisted Reproduction Techniques states that egg donations must always be not-for-profit and donors can only receive financial compensation that exclusively covers the costs and inconvenience caused by their gesture of solidarity.

The medical director of the Eugin Group points out that “the Spanish altruistic ethos is also reflected in other types of donations, namely, those of organs, in which Spain has been a world leader for 26 consecutive years.” Last year, it surpassed itself again, reaching 46.9 donors per million population, according to the assessment that the National Transplant Organization (ONT) offered last week.

In 2017, the Eugin Group performed around 3,500 egg donation treatments. Regarding the profile of women who turn to in vitro fertilization with donor eggs, the average age is 42 years.

ESHRE Campus

The medical, psychological and ethical aspects of egg donation were addressed in Barcelona during the first edition of the ESHRE Campus, (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) dedicated to this topic. The symposium served as a prologue to the ESHRE annual conference, which this year will take place in the Catalan capital from July 1 to 4.

As regards Eugin, its scientific director, Dr. Rita Vassena, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of ESHRE, took part in the Campus by giving two presentations: one of which was about the management of egg banks, and another on the consequences of donation for the mother and her son. In addition, Vassena led a discussion panel among several European specialists, alongside the expert in bioethics Guido Pennings, on the subject of egg donation.
